Medicare Rebates

If you have a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your General Practitioner (GP) or Psychiatrist and are attending individual therapy, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate of $96.65 per session for up to 10 sessions within a calendar year. The full session fee is payable at the time of your appointment, and your Medicare rebate will be processed on your behalf. Once your claim has been processed, Medicare will deposit the rebate amount into your nominated bank account. If you’re unsure whether you qualify for a Medicare rebate, your GP can provide guidance on eligibility and the MHCP referral process.

Couples and relationship sessions and forensic treatment sessions are not eligible for a Medicare rebate.

Private Health Insurance

Many private health funds offer rebates for psychological services, depending on your provider and level of coverage. If you are eligible, you will need to pay the full session fee at the time of your appointment, after which you will receive a paid invoice that you can submit to your health fund for reimbursement. As rebate amounts vary, we recommend checking directly with your insurer to confirm your level of cover and any out-of-pocket costs.

No, you do not need a referral to see a psychologist. However, if you wish to claim Medicare rebates, you will need a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP.

  • A mental health care plan lets you claim a Medicare rebate for up to 10 individual sessions with an eligible mental health professional each calendar year. To start with, your doctor or psychiatrist will refer you for up to 6 psychological sessions at a time. If you need more, your psychologist will let your doctor know, and your doctor will decide if they can refer you for further sessions. It's important to note that Medicare benefits for psychological therapy services are capped at 10 individual sessions per calendar year. Therefore, any unused sessions from the previous year's referral that are used in the new year will count towards the 10-session limit for the next year.

No, couples therapy is not covered under a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). Medicare rebates only apply to individual therapy sessions for eligible mental health concerns. If you have any questions about rebates or payment options, please feel free to reach out.

No, forensic treatment is not covered by Medicare. However, if you would like support with related difficulties or challenges (e.g. anxiety, depression, trouble adjusting to a stressful event), you may be eligible for a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). Depending on how comfortable you feel, you can talk to your GP about your intention to seek treatment for both forensic and other difficulties, or only mention the related difficulties and challenges.

At Urban Oasis Psychology, we understand that unexpected things come up, and sometimes you may need to reschedule or cancel an appointment. However, to ensure fairness and availability for all clients, we kindly ask for at least 48 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your session.

    • Cancellations made between 24 and 48 hours before the appointment will incur a 50% session fee.

    • Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the scheduled appointment will incur the full session fee.

    • Non-attendance without notice will incur the full session fee.

All outstanding fees must be settled before booking any future appointments. If your payment method is on file, cancellation and non-attendance fees will be processed automatically. Unfortunately, these fees are not eligible for a Medicare rebate. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in respecting this policy. If you need to reschedule or cancel an appointment, please notify us as soon as possible.

  • The Australian Psychological Society (APS) has set a recommended fee of $311 for a 45-60 minute psychological consultation for the 2024-2025 financial year. While our fees are structured independently, we aim to keep services accessible while maintaining high-quality care.

If you have any further questions about fees, rebates, or session details, please reach out. We’re happy to guide you through the process.
